CPR Institute Presents its 2010 Law Firm Award for Excellence in ADR to Herbert Smith LLP and Goldman Sloan Nash & Haber LLP

New York, NY, February 1, 2011 – The International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR Institute), a nonprofit think tank and alliance of global corporations, law firms, scholars, and public institutions dedicated to the principles of commercial conflict prevention and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), has presented the organization’s fourth annual “Law Firm Award for Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution” to two firms this year.

Large Firm Award - Herbert Smith LLP

Herbert Smith LLP was recognized for its leadership and dedication to the principles of conflict management and resolution. Not content to rest on its laurels as the winner of CPR Institute’s 2008 Law Firm Award, Herbert Smith LLP pushed the envelope by expanding the profile of ADR throughout its international network of offices, including within the Middle East and Asia. With regard to industry sectors, the firm has focused on making educational material available to insurance company claims handlers to help them use ADR more effectively, and in the construction sector, the firm has focused on addressing clients’ needs in relation to both mediation and adjudication. Finally, the firm has expanded the reach of its integrated training program for university and high school students considering a career in the law.

Herbert Smith LLP's Head of ADR, Alexander Oddy, commented: "We are grateful to the Award Review Committee and to the CPR Institute for recognizing our commitment to excellence in the use of ADR in all its forms, which is a core aspect of maintaining our status as the leading dispute resolution practice in Europe and Asia."

Small Firm Award– Goldman Sloan Nash & Haber LLP
Goldman Sloan Nash & Haber LLP (GSNH), a nationally-recognized Toronto-based law firm that has served the legal needs of businesses and individuals for 35 years, was recognized as the first ever small firm to receive this award for its commitment to ADR practice and education and for its focus on dispute resolution practices. The firm makes training in ADR available to their lawyers, encourages their lawyers to advance their knowledge in ADR and boasts an international library
devoted to ADR. Team Resolution, their Toronto-based Alternative Dispute Resolution group, has provided years of sought after ADR services worldwide.

Team Resolution’s Chair, David Bristow Q.C. states, “We are delighted and honored to receive this prestigious Award from such an eminent international institution.  It is recognition of the firm's long standing commitment to ADR and to the field of dispute and conflict management."

In 2007, CPR created the Law Firm Award for Excellence in ADR to recognize law firms that demonstrate an integrated approach and a deep commitment to using ADR principles and techniques. The judging criteria includes processes, techniques, systems, commitment and scholarship which address the resolution, prevention or creative management of major disputes.  Previous honorees include the Boston Law Collaborative (2009), Herbert Smith LLP (2008) and Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP (2007). Having recognized the difference in practices among large and small firms, CPR made two law firm awards in 2010 -- one for large firms and one for small firms.

“For their commitment to principled and creative conflict management and resolution, the CPR Institute is proud to honor these two outstanding firms,” said Kathleen A. Bryan, CEO of the CPR Institute. “They have set a successful benchmark for addressing resolution, prevention and management of major disputes in multiple practice areas.”
