Program Description: 

This program, hosted by Banco do Brasil (BB) and co-presented by the Petrobras, Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU), the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR), and other leading public and private sector institutions, brings together senior leaders from government, state-owned enterprises, the judiciary, the legal community, and industry to explore how Brazil can strengthen dispute prevention and modernize dispute resolution. 

The event builds on CPR’s longstanding leadership in dispute prevention and alternative dispute resolution since its founding in 1977 and advances the objectives of CPR’s Brazil Initiative, launched in 2011 to promote mediation, arbitration, and innovative conflict management practices throughout Brazil through education, capacity building, thought leadership, and collaboration with Brazilian institutions.

Supported by CPR’s Brazilian Advisory Board (BAB), which has helped develop practical resources, educational programs, and best practices for the Brazilian market, the program reflects more than a decade of engagement aimed at fostering a stronger culture of dispute prevention and effective dispute resolution.

Through expert roundtables, interactive workshops, case studies, and a collaborative Transformation Lab, participants will gain practical tools for preventing disputes, selecting appropriate ADR mechanisms, and promoting innovation across public and private organizations. The program will culminate in the development of a Brazil Dispute Prevention and Resolution Action Agenda, designed to support continued collaboration, institutional transformation, and broader adoption of dispute prevention and resolution best practices throughout Brazil.

CPR IN BRAZIL 

CPR Institute’s presence in Brazil dates to 2011, with the launch of an initiative to promote the use of commercial mediation here. Thanks to grants from global corporations, CPR developed a strong collaborative network with Brazilian ADR providers, bar associations and other professional organizations, as well as the Brazilian Judiciary. CPR also translated key material into Portuguese, including rules, protocols, training materials and success stories.

Today, CPR carries out its mission in Brazil with the help of its Brazilian Advisory Board, a body of experts composed of CPR members with connections to Brazil. CPR and its Brazilian Advisory Board regularly organize trainings and educational programs for corporate counsel, business associations, private lawyers and judges on the benefits of using ADR.

Since 2013, CPR has organized annual conferences on ADR in different parts of Brazil, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Curitiba. They also support the CPR International Mediation Competition, held annually in São Paulo, which attracts law students from around the world to compete in Brazil.

To fulfill its mission, CPR regularly produces materials and resources, including manuals and guides and with the assistance of the Brazilian Advisory Board, such as:

  • The Corporate Counsel Practical Guide for Arbitration in Brazil (available to the public as a digital download) inspired by the CPR Corporate Counsel Manual for Cross-Border Dispute Resolution and with the purpose of providing in-house counsel with the resources they need to navigate through the key opportunities and challenges involved in arbitration proceedings.
  • The Brazil Mediation & ADR Guide, providing a practical overview of ADR in Brazil.

Professor in the Graduate Program at Fundação Getulio Vargas Law Schools in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, awarded in the "Highlights" category of the 2020 Esdras Law Teaching Prize. Lawyer, Conflict Mediator and Legal Designer. Mentor of the Academic Extension "Laboratório de Design Jurídico" at the University of São Paulo between 2020 and 2022. Resident at the agency and design school Kaopilot Berlin in 2021, the same year in which she coordinated the Study Group on Diversity, Innovation and Development at FGV Direito SP. She is currently a researcher at the Research Group Women and Democracy: Income and Gender Justice at IDP (Brazilian Institute of Education, Development and Research) and Head of Community and Partnerships at legaltech Linte.
Holds a specialization from the University of Coimbra. Graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo. Participant in the Summer School of the London School of Economics and Political Science, extension courses by the Interaction Design Foundation, AJ&Smart, ICAgile, Insper, FIA and FGV.

Clara Rachel Barros Nitão. Federal Attorney. National Federal Attorney for Negotiations. Holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and a degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB).

Daniel Gustavo Santos Roque is a Federal Prosecutor, graduated in Law from the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), with specializations in Criminal Law and Public Law. He has extensive experience in the Attorney General's Office, working in the areas of litigation, legal consulting, competition law, infrastructure and defense of federal public entities. Throughout his career, he has held coordination and strategic advisory functions, with emphasis on the extrajudicial representation of public agencies and foundations, acting before the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) and conducting consensual dispute resolution procedures. Since July 2025, he has held the position of Federal National Prosecutor for Extrajudicial Affairs.

David Cohen is the Sector Manager for Monitoring Strategic Issues regarding Alternative Dispute Resolution within Petrobras' Legal Department.

He is a member of the Mediation and Consensual Methods Commission of the OAB/RJ (Brazilian Bar Association – Rio de Janeiro Chapter).

He holds a law degree from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and a postgraduate degree in Business Law from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV).

Denis Campos Braz is a Solutions Manager within the Risk Division at Banco do Brasil, an institution he has been with since 2009. He holds a degree in Business Administration and postgraduate qualifications in Criminal Analysis, Leadership, and Innovation. Throughout his career, he has worked in and led teams across strategic areas such as corporate security, insurance, supplementary pension plans, capitalization products, risk management, and internal controls. Currently, he coordinates initiatives focused on the strategy for judicial settlements where the Bank is a defendant and on legal risk management, while also strengthening the risk and capital management culture within the First Line of Defense. He has experience leading transformation, governance, and risk mitigation projects, with a focus on value creation, operational efficiency, and business sustainability.

Eduardo Perazza leads the Civil Dispute Prevention and Resolution practice and has over two decades of experience in complex disputes, crisis management, and strategic action planning. He provides preventive consulting services and conducts administrative disputes, arbitrations, and judicial and extrajudicial proceedings, in addition to supporting clients in the development of dispute resolution systems (dispute system design).

Isabella Nobre Brant holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of São Paulo Law School (FDUSP). She completed certificate studies (Zertifikatsstudium) in Deutsches Recht (German Law) and Privatrechtstheorie (Private Law Theory) at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). She currently works as a consultant and legal designer at Studio Mater and is the co-founder and coordinator of the Legal Design Study Group (NELD) at the University of São Paulo Law School.

Knar A. Nahikian, Esq. is Vice President - Global Initiatives at the CPR Institute, the think tank side of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.

In her role, she oversees all of CPR’s international initiatives outside the U.S., including CPR's international advisory boards in Brazil, Canada, and Europe, as well as activities domestically and internationally in connection with the Y-ADR Steering Committee, an international leadership group of young professionals. She leads two of CPR's flaghip international programs - the International Mediation Competition and the Africa Arbitration Day-New York moot and conference - and developed CPR's full day webinar program - the Global Conference - bringing together four substantive panels from around the world to offer international perspectives on ADR themes annually. Rafael Mota Alves Diniz is a law student at the USP Law School (Largo São Francisco) and the co-founder and president of the SanFran Law Innovation Lab, the FDUSP’s legal innovation laboratory.

Federal External Control Auditor at the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), currently serving as Deputy Secretary for Consensual Solutions and Conflict Prevention (SecexConsenso). Civil engineer, holds a master’s degree in Economics, and is a doctoral candidate in Regulation Law.
