The Role Dispute Review Boards Play in Dispute Prevention

Dispute Review Boards typically are panels comprised of three individuals who are appointed at the start of a project to help the parties prevent and resolve disputes that arise during the course of a project. DRBs often are viewed as serving only a dispute resolution role--offering non-binding recommendations on how the parties can bring to closure disputes that have been elevated to claims. But, what is less well understood is the role that DRBs play in moving attention to conflicts upstream and actually preventing disputes from arising in the first place.

Our speaker, Kurt Dettman, with more than two decades’ experience helping bring complex construction projects to successful conclusion by avoiding value-depleting disputes, will speak about DRBs as a dispute prevention mechanism, highlighting the importance of good dispute system design and the qualities and practices that DRB members bring to the role that help keep conflict under control and steer project teams toward more harmonious paths.
