1. What has been a beneficial aspect of engaging with the CPR Institute for you personally or professionally?
Engaging with the CPR Institute has provided valuable opportunities to connect with a broad spectrum of professionals—from in-house counsel to peers at other firms, as well as arbitrators and mediators representing a range of backgrounds and experiences. These interactions have brought diverse perspectives and practical insights, fostering both professional growth and a deeper understanding of the factors that shape commercial and legal decisions. CPR’s programming consistently opens doors to learning from sector experts and practitioners, and offers a unique window into in-house viewpoints, which has been instrumental in broadening knowledge and enhancing practical skills within the field. I would be remiss to exclude the Y-ADR Steering Committee’s mindfulness to pay it forward to budding lawyers seeking a career in ADR.
2. What inspired you to steer your career toward ADR, and what steps did you take to make it to where you are today?
My journey toward a career in ADR was sparked during my time as a disputes lawyer, where, after nearly eight years of practice, I was introduced to the FDI Moot. This experience ignited my passion for being a global citizen while simultaneously advancing clients’ interests through mechanisms that offer greater predictability and efficiency. Motivated by this, I pursued an LLM in International Arbitration at the University of Miami School of Law, where I was honored to be the institution’s inaugural FDI Moot Scholar. This path enabled me to sit for the New York Bar, ultimately qualifying me to practice in one of the world’s leading ADR jurisdictions. Each step has been intentional and fueled by a desire to contribute meaningfully to the field of dispute resolution on an international scale.
3. What is one piece of advice you would give to somebody who wanted to pursue a career in ADR?
Pursuing a career in ADR is both challenging and deeply rewarding. The journey requires consistent dedication, but the personal and professional benefits are significant and truly enriching. My advice is to invest equally in honing your skills and building your professional network—establish your personal brand while remaining open to learning from others. The ADR community is filled with individuals who offer a wealth of experience and insight; engaging with them has been invaluable to my own growth, and it will be for you as well. Embrace the process, stay curious, and recognize that every effort you make contributes meaningfully to your development in this dynamic field.
4. What personal characteristics are most beneficial to you in your career?
I find that a natural curiosity and willingness to delve into the details have been especially valuable in my career. I enjoy thoroughly examining issues and making connections that might otherwise be overlooked, allowing me to present matters in a comprehensive and balanced way that supports both clients and adjudicators. Additionally, I value the relationships I’ve built, as networking and fostering connections have opened doors not only for myself, but also for clients and peers. These qualities have proven beneficial, and I am grateful for how they have shaped my professional journey.
5. How can people with an interest in ADR get hands-on experience to further their career?
Seeking mentorship from experienced practitioners is invaluable, as it accelerates your growth and provides practical insights that are difficult to acquire independently. Additionally, engaging in targeted workshops and seminars offers firsthand exposure to ADR processes and helps build essential foundational skills.
6. What is your favorite ADR process to practice?
That would be international arbitration for me. Its dynamic nature and complexity are especially compelling, as it mirrors many aspects of a traditional court proceeding, including rigorous investigations and the likelihood of a formal hearing or trial. I am drawn to the challenge and the intellectual rigor required to navigate cases that span multiple jurisdictions and legal systems. Engaging in international arbitration offers a unique opportunity to deepen my understanding of diverse laws and practices, while also fostering a global perspective that is invaluable in today’s interconnected world. Each case presents new learning experiences, demanding adaptability and a keen attention to detail, which I find both stimulating and rewarding. This process not only allows me to apply my analytical skills and curiosity, but also provides a platform to contribute meaningfully to resolving complex, cross-border disputes. The multi-jurisdictional element keeps me continuously engaged and ensures that my approach remains comprehensive and balanced, reflecting my commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes for all parties involved.
